Large South Australian poultry farm sold to one of country's largest processors

A major South Australian poultry farm, Double B Farm, has a grower's agreement in place with one of the country's largest processors, and is expected to make AUD 16.5 million for its vendors, Dawn Buckby and Robert Blott, AgProperty Central reported.

The property covers 59 hectares and situated 110 km north of Adelaide Central Business District. It boasts 12 fully operational broiler sheds, offering a vast production area of 30,599 square meters and a substantial capacity to house up to 535,000 birds.

The farm is well-equipped with a mains water supply and draws power from both a mains connection and two onsite solar farms. It is strategically located for ease of access, availability of labour, and proximity to nearby processing facilities, making it an attractive investment opportunity.

Economists predict that current consumer preferences for lean protein will continue to drive demand, making this a promising prospect for high-net-worth investors and existing participants in the poultry industry. Chicken is currently the most affordable meat protein for Australian consumers and is the most consumed compared to other meats. Given these trends, large-scale, contracted broiler farms like Double B Farm are rarely available on the market.

In the year leading up to June 2023, Australia produced around 1,367,000 tonnes of chicken meat, primarily catering to domestic consumption, which stands at approximately 50 kg per capita per year. An estimated 68% of Australians include chicken meat in their meals at least twice a week, and this consumption is anticipated to continue its growth.

The sale of Double B Farm is being managed by Commercial Real Estate Services Australia, led by John Harrison, Phil Schell, and Angus Bills, through an expression-of-interest campaign set to conclude on December 7.
