AquaBounty Technologies announces expansion in another US state
AquaBounty Technologies Inc., a company that raises genetically modified salmon at its facility in Randolph County, Indiana, the United States, has announced plans to build a large-scale commercial facility in Mayfield, Kentucky.
When asked why its Indiana site was not selected, a company spokesperson replied: "Albany continues to be an important part of the AquaBounty farm system and will for years to come."
The Indiana aquaculture plant was AquaBounty's first farm in the US where the company is currently raising about 1,200 tonnes of conventional Atlantic salmon.
At the same location, AquaBounty is raising its genetically engineered AquAdvantage Salmon, the US's first genetically enhanced fish protein approved by the Food and Drug Authority (FDA) for human consumption.
While Indiana was one of 230 sites considered for the new plant, the company said the Kentucky site exceeded its selection criteria.
AquaBounty said the new plant will have annual fish production of 10,000 tonnes, which is about eight times more than the facility in Albany.
