Germany-China MoU seeks to improve cooperation in veterinary drug quality

The German Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety (BVL) signed a memorandum of understanding with the China Institute for Veterinary Drug Control (IVDC) in late October to ensure and enhance cooperation in the field of veterinary drug quality.

The signing of the MoU paves the way for further bilateral cooperation between the VHL and the IVDC. Both authorities intend to regularly exchange information on the legal basis and quality requirements for active ingredients of veterinary medicinal products.

Other important matters of concern include the use of antibiotics, data management using artificial intelligence (AI), and inspections to consistently ensure the high quality of veterinary medicines.

China is one of the world's largest exporters of active pharmaceutical ingredients, on which the German industry also depends for the production of veterinary medicines.

China plays a particularly important role in the supply of antibiotic and antiparasitic active ingredients for veterinary medicinal products. For this reason, BVL launched an initiative in 2016 to establish cooperation with the authorities responsible for veterinary medicinal products in China.

As a result, several bilateral workshops were held on the subject.
