Tanzania allocates 10,000 hectares to grow livestock feed

The decision was part of the government’s initiatives to improve the country's dairy industry, reported The Citizen.

Dr. Sophia Mlote, registrar of the Tanzania Dairy Board (TDB) said livestock feed grown in this new farm at Kongwa District, Dodoma Region will be allocated to dairy farms to boost milk production and increase milk quality.

She added that milk production in Tanzania is a challenging industry due to shortage of fodder and livestock feeds.

Match Maker Associates, a business consultancy based in Arusha said Tanzania produces 18.2 million tonnes a year of commercial-use fodder (60% produced by state farms, 40% by private farms), but the country requires 78 million tonnes a year of fodder to meet demand.

According to statistics provided by the Tanzania Milk Processors Association, 70% of dairy farming costs are budgeted towards livestock feed and fodder.
