Pakistan to invest US$87 million into aquaculture
Three aquaculture projects are in the works backed by the Pakistan government in collaboration with international agencies, reported The Nation.
For these projects, the Pakistan government has consulted development partners such as the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO), World Food Programme and the United Nations Industrial Development Organisation.
Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan have been identified as key sites for the aquaculture projects.
Dr. Hashim Popalzai, Federal Secretary said the projects aim to develop and promote shrimp and trout farming, as well as catch culture to improve productivity and boost livelihood prospects for communities living in these selected areas, identified as suitable for fresh water fish farming.
He said the Asian Development Bank has voiced positive interest in support of the government's plans for aquaculture expansion. A first fisheries policy for shrimp and trout farming, plus catch culture will be implemented by the government.
Mina Dowlatchahi, FAO Pakistan representative said Pakistan has substantial potential for aquaculture development with plenty of natural fisheries and aquatic resources.
She added the local aquaculture industry can contribute to the nation by improving export revenues, creating job opportunities for communities in coastlines, increasing nutrition intake and safeguarding food security, and closing the gap on Pakistan's economic gender inequality.
