UK government initiates review to tackle unfair practices in egg supply chain

The United Kingdom government has unveiled plans for a comprehensive review aimed at eradicating unfair practices in the egg supply chain, which will actively engage with industry stakeholders to address issues related to transparency, the clarity of contractual terms and conditions, and the availability of data from the supply chain, Farmers Guide reported.

Thérèse Coffey, the UK Secretary of State for Environment, Food, and Rural Affairs, said it is important to ensure fair compensation for producers of high-quality eggs. She stated that the government is firmly committed to promoting equity throughout food supply chains.

Industry groups, including the British Egg Industry Council, have welcomed the review. Gary Ford, the deputy chief executive of the Council, explained that the review would focus on comprehending the current functioning of contractual arrangements within the sector. It would also determine whether additional legislation is necessary to govern relationships between producers and buyers, promoting a more transparent and equitable supply chain.

Robert Gooch, the chief executive officer of the British Free Range Egg Producers Association (BFREPA), has long advocated for a review of egg supply agreements for producers. He expressed his support for the consultation on fairness within the egg supply chain. Gooch stressed the need for the consultation to provide further stability to the sector and to prevent future egg shortages.

The review aims to take into account the perspectives of egg producers, packers, processors, retailers, and other stakeholders involved in the egg supply chain. It will be open for input until December 22, allowing industry participants to contribute their insights and experiences.
