UK's first vegan butcher launches, meat alternative industry in UK growing
Rudy's, the first permanent vegan butcher in the United Kingdom, has opened as demand for vegan products and alternative meats grow in Britain, Reuters reported.
Rudy's will sell meat-free bacon, sausage and turkey made from soy and seitan. Matthew Foster, co-founder of Rudy's, said their baycon, soysage and turk'y has meat-like texture and tastes like meat.
More British people have embraced vegan products, cutting out animal-derived ingredients from their diet or reducing the meat and dairy they consume weekly.
EMW, a law firm, reported a 128% increase in new trademarks registered in the UK related to vegan food in 2019, which includes vegan ice cream and pastries.
Last month, European Union lawmakers ruled that banning terms such as "veggie burger" or "vegan sausages" would discourage consumers from changing to a plant-based diet. The ban was proposed by EU farmers, arguing that these terms could confuse consumers.
