Peru aims to boost its aquaculture sector

José Salardi Rodríguez, head of the Ministry of Production Peru, said aquaculture can generate significant positive impact in areas of the country with fewer economic resources, especially as its fishing sector generates foreign exchange of more than US$3 billion annually, Fish Information & Services reported.

The official said his portfolio is looking to boost the aquaculture sector in Peru at the 2nd Latin American Summit for Fisheries and Aquaculture Sustainability event, adding that it could be the future of national fishing.

Minister Salardi said Peru's fishing industry in September registered a 156,400 tonnes landing volume, translated to an 81.4% growth year-on-year thanks to the positive performance of fishing aimed at direct human consumption (CHD), which grew 81.5%.

He also talked about the country's fight against illegal fishing and informativity, aiming to reduce informality by 30 percentage points as of July 2021 and to eradicate it completely by 2022.
