Aquaculture platform in Guangdong, China breeds over one million golden pomfrets

In Zhanjiang, Guangdong province, China a massive intelligent aquaculture platform by Guangdong Havwii Agricultural Group known as the Havwii 2 has been successfully breeding over one million golden pomfrets, along with other fish fry since its commencement in early August this year, China Daily reported.
The Havwii 2, designed as a semi-submersible truss-style intelligent aquaculture platform, boasts a staggering volume of 30,000 cubic meters and can facilitate the cultivation of over 1,000 tonnes of fish in a single farming cycle.
This intelligent aquaculture platform is the largest of its kind in Guangdong and is outfitted with a solar power system, ensuring self-sufficiency through green energy. Furthermore, it allows for unmanned operation and real-time remote monitoring during the fish farming process.
Lu Zhenxiang, assistant to the president of Guangdong Havwii Agricultural Group, said that they have made a significant investment to breed golden pomfrets as there is a high demand for the fish in the market.
Lus said the initial batch of golden pomfrets is expected to be available in the market before the Spring Festival, with an estimated output value of CNY 20 to 30 million.
The launch of the aquaculture platform aligns with Guangdong's ambitious initiative to advance deep-sea aquaculture equipment and smart fisheries. This aims to drive the transformation and modernization of the marine fisheries industry, making it more informed, intelligent, and modern.
Guangdong is already operating another offshore aquaculture platform, Havwii 1, since April, with a breeding capability of 20 kg per cubic meter. These platforms incorporate digitalisation systems for fishery data collection, including the monitoring of fish growth and water quality.
The Havwii 2 is designed to have a 20-year operating life and will be utilised for the cultivation of popular seawater fish species such as brown croakers, cobias, and giant groupers.
In recent years, offshore aquaculture has emerged as a potent force driving high-quality development in Guangdong, complementing the province's expanding blue-sea economy. In 2022, the province's marine production yielded an output value of over 1.8 trillion yuan, a 5.4% year-on-year increase, constituting 14% of the province's GDP, as reported by the Department of Natural Resources of Guangdong.
