Malaysian chicken egg subsidy increased
Annuar Musa, Malaysia's anti-inflation task force chairman, said the subsidy for chicken egg output has been increased to MYR 0.10 (~US$0.021; MYR 1 = US$0.21) effective immediately, Free Malaysia Today reported.
Annuar said that the Malaysian government would spend more than MYR 20 million (~US$4.2 million) as a result of the subsidy increase to stabilise the nation's egg supply.
At a press conference, he said that the task force agreed to increase the subsidy for Grade A, B, and C chicken eggs, and the finance ministry has also agreed to this decision.
After the subsidy was increased from MYR 0.03 (~US$0.0063) to MYR 0.08 (~US$0.017) per egg last month, there was still an additional cost of MYR 0.02 (~US$0.0042) for producers, Annuar said, adding that the average cost of producing an egg currently stood at MYR 0.51 (~US$0.11), while the ceiling price was MYR 0.41 (~US$0.087).
This made egg producers less likely to produce enough Grade A, B, and C chicken eggs, he continued.
