Bahrain's top egg producer to double capacity to 100 million yearly

The largest egg producer in Arab state Bahrain, General Poultry Company (GPC),  is doubling its capacity to nearly 100 million a year under an expansion plan that is set to start next week, Zawya reported.

GPC, established in 1977, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Bahrain's sovereign wealth fund, Mumtalakat.

The company said the expansion will transform GPC into a fully-automated operation using state-of-the-art technology, with the highest level of biosecurity and premium food safety standards. The new facilities are likely to be ready by August next year.

GPC currently has a 65% share of local production and 18% of overall market supply.

For its farm equipment, the company has commissioned Big Dutchman for eight new bird rearing and egg production facilities.

GPC has also partnered with Moba to provide state-of-the-art egg grading, packing and processing machinery.

Apart from improving the farm's operational efficiency through automation and technology, the revamp will also enhance food security and provide more jobs for Bahrainis, the company said.

Financial terms of the project were not disclosed.
