The latest data from the Republic of Ireland's Central Statistics Office (CSO) reveals a 3.6% decrease in cattle slaughterings during the period from January to September 2023 when compared to the same months in the previous year, Agriland reported.

The total number of cattle slaughtered in 2023 saw a significant decline, amounting to 51,081 fewer head than during the same period in 2022, with a total of nearly 1.4 million cattle slaughtered during 2023.

The swine sector also witnessed a reduction in the number of slaughtered animals in 2023 compared to the previous year.

Mairead Griffin, a statistician at CSO, said that swine slaughterings experienced a 10% decrease, with just under 2.5 million swine slaughtered in the same nine-month period.

This reduction translated to approximately 274,005 fewer swine slaughtered in 2023 when compared to the equivalent period in 2022.

In September 2023, cattle slaughterings experienced a substantial drop, with a 10.5% decrease, accounting for just over 153,000 head compared to September 2022 when 17,958 fewer head were slaughtered.

The pig sector, like cattle and sheep numbers, also observed a decrease in September 2023, with 36,868 fewer swine slaughtered, amounting to 264,351 head in contrast to September 2022.
