18 beef, veal products added to Canada's list of more than 830 recalled items
Another 18 products have been included by Canada's public health officials to a growing list of recalled beef and veal products, Food Safety News reported on October 25.
The list currently has more than 830 entries of affected products. Canada recently saw regional and countrywide recalls prompted by an investigation into E.coli contamination.
"The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) is conducting a food safety investigation on E. coli O157:H7 in various beef and veal products sold by Ryding-Regency Meat Packers Ltd. - Establishment 99 - and St. Ann's Foods Inc./Ryding-Regency Meat Packers Ltd. - Establishment 639," according to a statement on the food agency's website.
So far, CFIA did not provide any update on its E. coli investigation. Recall notices were "triggered by the CFIA's inspection activities," but the government has not disclose what the particular inspection trigger was.
No illnesses have been confirmed in relation to E. coli contamination.
The latest development has also affected the United States. The US Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) issued a public health alert for raw non-intact beef products obtained from imported beef from Ontario, Canada, that have been recalled by Ryding-Regency. That alert remains in effect.
Meanwhile, Canadian officials have advised the public and foodservice businesses not to use recalled beef and veal products.
