India's NSC to sell Monsanto's hybrid corn seeds
The National Seed Corporation (NSC) in India has ventured with multinational firm Monsanto India Ltd (MIL), to market its hybrid corn seed.
MIL signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with government-owned NSC early this month to market and distribute 200 tonnes of hybrid corn seed this year.
NSC will sell two varieties of seeds - Dekalb Double (70001) and Dekalb Prabal (1562) and will distribute to 81 direct-sale counters and 2,700 dealers spread across the country.
Under the MoU, Monsanto will produce process and package the corn seeds under its brand. The packages will also bear the logo of NSC, according to NSC Chairman and Managing Director BB Pattanaik.
Pattanaik said NSC and Monsanto will decide the net selling price by mutual discussion in the coming days.
The MoU valid for a year is an excellent example of public-private- partnership in the seeds production and marketing sector, Pattanaik said.
Dekalb Double (70001) is a water-logging and drought resistant seed, ideally suited for Kharif season. It has the potential to increase the yield up to 82 quintal per hectares against 75 quintal per hectare from other variety seeds. It is a flexible hybrid seed that has maturity duration of 95 days.
Dekalb Prabal (1562) variety can produce high yield of 92 quintal per hectare compared to 87 quintal per hectare from other varieties. It is a highly stable and full season seed that has excellent tip filling.
