Myanmar Fisheries Federation calls for ban on combined poultry-fish farms

The system uses poultry excrement to feed the fish, increasing the likelihood of diseases infecting the fish's digestive system which could be passed on to humans, reported Myanmar Times.

The concern was raised at the 30th meeting between private companies and the Private Sector Development Committee led by Myanmar Vice President U Myint Swe.

Daw Toe Nanda Tin, vice chair of the Myanmar Fisheries Federation said combined poultry-fish farms were outlawed in China since 2010, but has now emerged all over Myanmar.

According to information provided by the Myanmar Fisheries Federation to the Vice President, up to 80% of fish farms are poultry-fish operations owned by foreigners.

She added that no new law needs to be passed to regulate the system. Instead, regulators can impose a ban on any construction built above fish farms for anyone intending to apply for a fish farm license.
