Ukraine grain harvests down 12.3 percent on-year



Ukraine harvested 43.3 million tonnes of grain as of October 23, down 12.3 percent from the same period last year.


Grains were harvested in 14.6 million hectares or 96 percent of forecasted area, according to the Ministry of Agrarian Policy.


Among the harvested grain are 21.6 million tonnes of wheat, 12.7 million tonnes of barley, 5.6 million tonnes of corn and one million tonnes of rye.


Grain harvests are ongoing.


Growers harvested soy throughout 504,000 hectares, or 80 percent of the forecasted area, and production volumes totalled 821,300 tonnes with the average yield of 16.3 bushels per hectare compared to 15.6 bushels per hectare in 2008.


The Ministry is forecasting Ukraine's grain harvest at nearly 42.9 million tonnes in clean weight compared to 53.3 million tonnes last year.
