Ukraine planted winter crops on 5.55 million hectares to October 27

Ukraine planted winter crops on 5.55 million hectares to October 27, 87 percent of the planned total area, the agriculture ministry said Friday.

By the same date last year, winter crops had been planted on 7.2 million hectares.

As a result of dry weather disrupting Ukraine's winter grain planting, winter crops have sprouted on only 43 percent of the total planted area to date.

The agriculture ministry said the country was likely to harvest in 2006 only 9 million tonnes of winter wheat, including 4 million to 4.5 million tonnes of milling wheat, compared with last year's winter wheat harvest of 17.54 million tonnes.
