Faroe Islands salmon farmer Hiddenfjord achieves 94% reduction in CO2 emissions

Faroe Islands-based salmon producer Hiddenfjord has announced a significant environmental milestone, revealing a substantial 94% reduction in carbon emissions associated with overseas transportation after transitioning to sea transport exclusively, Fish Farmer reported.
Hiddenfjord made the decision to halt all air freight exports last year. This bold move positioned Hiddenfjord as the world's first salmon producer to exclusively rely on more environmentally friendly, low-emission methods for the transportation of goods.
The company uses oceangoing vessels to deliver fresh salmon to its primary markets in Europe and North America, leading to the reduction of carbon dioxide emissions, amounting to 200,000 tonnes after just one year.
Hiddenfjord's chief executive officer, Atli Gregersen, emphasised the company's belief in its responsibility not only to provide the finest salmon but to do so in the most sustainable manner possible. He recounted his inspiration to take resolute action after attending a climate change lecture called "Making a Difference," hosted in the Faroe Islands by musician and political activist Bob Geldof.
Hiddenfjord highlighted the results of a recent survey conducted by the Consumer Evaluation Centre. In a blind taste test featuring salmon transported by air and sea, more than 100 consumers were unable to distinguish any difference in taste, texture, or aroma. Both products were rated equally favourably, underscoring the company's commitment to maintaining salmon quality while adopting more sustainable transportation methods.
To further optimise its practices, Hiddenfjord is expanding its smolt facility with the aim of reducing the time its salmon spend at sea, thus contributing to the ongoing reduction of its environmental footprint.
