Alberta, Canada implements CAD 160 million livestock feed assistance programme

The Agriculture Minister of Alberta, Canada, in collaboration with a Member of Parliament from Calgary, Canada has introduced a vital livestock feed assistance programme to support farmers grappling with the consequences of yet another year of severe drought, The Western Producer reported.

The joint Canada-Alberta AgriRecovery assistance programme, valued at a substantial CAD 160 million, is designed to provide much-needed relief to livestock producers who have been severely impacted by the adverse drought conditions experienced this year. This initiative aims to alleviate their losses and address the extraordinary financial pressures stemming from this year's challenging conditions.

Eligible livestock producers will have access to financial support, specifically up to CAD 150 per head for breeding stock, commencing from December 31. The application process for this aid is scheduled to conclude on January 15, 2024.

This programme will encompass eligible expenses up until March 2024, but only within the regions that have been designated by the Agriculture Financial Services Corp. in Alberta.

In line with the overarching AgriRecovery framework, ranchers and farmers from the Canadian states of British Columbia and Saskatchewan will collectively benefit from CAD 219 million in total federal funding. Each province will also contribute its respective share to this programme.

Saskatchewan had previously released its segment of the AgriRecovery funding in late August, providing essential assistance of CAD 80 per head.
