A brief analysis of China's fermented feed ingredients market

China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs recently issued the revised version of "Fermented Soybean Meal for Feed Raw Materials" (NY/T2218-2022)" — the country's first fermented feed raw material standard — which will take effect on October 1, 2022.
There are currently four approved categories of fermented feed ingredients, namely, fermented soybean meal, fermented cottonseed protein, yeast and post-fermentation residue.

Currently, there are more than 70 fermented soybean meal manufacturers in China — more than in 2018. As production is highly concentrated, the top eight manufacturers, including Yihai Kerry, account for 80% of the country's output.

Among fermented raw materials, the output of post-fermentation residue is the largest, totaling 920,000 tonnes in 2021. Amino acid residue is the main product in this category. The output of glutamic acid residue totaled 350,000 tonnes. Major producers are Fufeng (134,500 tonnes), Yipin (125,000 tonnes), Meihua (40,000 tonnes), COFCO Biochemical (22,000 tonnes) and Linghua (15,000 tonnes), accounting for 97% of China’s production.
Last year, 160,000 tonnes of nucleotide residues were produced: 75,000 tonnes by Zhongrun Bio, 35,000 tonnes by Plum Blossoms, 17,000 tonnes by CJ, 16,000 tonnes by Chengfu and 12,000 tonnes by Julong, accounting for over 95% of national output.
Lysine residue production in the same year was nearly 100,000 tonnes. Major producers were Yipin (28,000 tonnes), Fufeng (20,000 tonnes), Yufeng (20,000 tonnes), Fengyuan (10,000 tonnes), accounting for more than 80% of China’s production.
As for yeast, brewer's yeast powder has an output of 130,000 tonnes (of which Budweiser's brewer's yeast powder, the key variety, has an output of 90,000 tonnes). Saccharomyces cerevisiae culture is another major yeast product, with an annual output of more than 170,000 tonnes. In this regard, Anhui Dongfang Xinsheng Biotechnology has an output of 45,000 tonnes, Cangzhou Dongfang Veterinary Medicine at 25,000 tonnes, Xi'an Ruohan Biotechnology at 20,000 tonnes, Yipin at 17,000 tonnes and Hebei Ferment Biotechnology at 10,000 tonnes. These producers’ output account for nearly 70% of the market.
