Veolia Bioconversion Malaysia gains approval to export insect-based feed ingredients to European markets

Veolia Bioconversion Malaysia Sdn Bhd announced on October 13 that it has received TRACES approval for its Entomeal and Entolipid insect-based ingredients from the Ministry of Agriculture in Malaysia, enabling Veolia to export these ingredients to aquaculture and livestock nutrition manufacturers in European markets, Pet Food Processing reported.
Entomeal, one of Veolia's key products, is an insect meal ingredient, while Entolipid is an insect-derived oil. Both products are produced in strict adherence to European Union industrial standards and comply with EU regulations for animal feed, as confirmed by Veolia.
The TRACES approval provides official recognition of these ingredients' traceability and food safety throughout the entire manufacturing process.
Fabrice Latchoumanin, general manager at Veolia Bioconversion Malaysia, highlighted the growing demand for sustainable and functional ingredients in the livestock feed and aqua feed industries. Insect-based feed offers several advantages for these applications, such as high digestibility and a nutritious feed source. Veolia aims to provide a sustainable alternative protein source to the European market, catering to the industry's evolving needs.
Entomeal and Entolipid are derived from black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) through a bioconversion process. This method ensures that all by-products are repurposed for use in agriculture, the generation of green energy, and animal nutrition. The sustainable process enhances the value of organic waste, contributes to decarbonisation efforts, and conserves water, energy, and land resources compared to traditional protein production for animal nutrition.
Veolia underlines that it operates one of the largest industrial insect processing facilities in Asia. This facility holds certifications for ISO 22000, GMP, and HAACP and has the capacity to produce approximately 3,000 tonnes of insect-based ingredients and fertilisers annually.
