US poultry production inched 1% last September

US poultry production totaled 4.481 billion pounds in September this year, up 1% on the year, with most of that chicken at 4.049 billion pounds (2% higher) followed by turkey at 420.551 million pounds (2% lower), according to the United States Department of Agriculture.

The chicken slaughter was up 2% at 816.343 million head with average live weights slightly heavier, while the turkey slaughter was down 6% at 17.188 million head with a 1.72 pound decline in the average live weight for all turkeys.

For the first three quarters of 2022, US poultry production is 38.788 billion pounds, 1% ahead of the 2021 pace.
