Germany approves draft law for labeling of food products of animal origin

Germany's federal government had recently approved a draft law on the labeling of food products of animal origin according to the way in which the animals are raised.

The law was submitted by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture.

In the future, labeling will have to provide information on the type of housing in which the animals were produced on a five-level scale (from smallest to largest available surface area; pen with more space, open-air pen and open-air production; and organic production).

As a first step, retailers will be required to label fresh, unprocessed pork when selling it.

Once the bill has been approved by the government, it will be sent to the European Union for notification.
