Ukraine reports lower grain harvest

Ukraine harvested 29.5 million tonnes of grain to Oct. 25 in bunker weight and the total harvest this year is expected to exceed 29 million tonnes in clean weight, down from 34.3 million tonnes last year, the agriculture ministry announced Friday (October 26, 2007).

Corn harvest to date was 6.2 million tonnes on 75 percent of the total area to be harvested, and total corn harvest this year is expected at 7 million tonnes.

The drop in harvest, attributed to adverse weather conditions, is resulting in a sharp fall in Ukraine's grain export.

Ukraine exported only 178,700 tonnes of grain between the beginning of the current marketing year July 1 and Sept. 30, compared with 4.1 million tonnes the year-earlier period.

The fall in exports is the result of a clampdown on the export of grain imposed by the government in order to maintain supplies to the domestic market in the face of a smaller harvest this year.
