Bangladesh's egg production increases in last 10 years
According to a keynote paper titled "Egg: A 'superfood'", the egg production in Bangladesh had increased by 2.86 times in the last 10 years.
The paper was presented by Dr. Md Shawkat Ali, a professor in the Department of Poultry Science of Bangladesh Agricultural University, during a webinar held to celebrate World Egg Day 2020.
The paper also revealed that egg consumption in the country reached 104.23 per capita this year.
The Bangladesh's Department of Livestock Services (DLS), Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) and World Poultry Science Association (Bangladesh) jointly organised the webinar.
This year's World Egg Day slogan in Bangladesh was "Eat eggs every day, increase immunity."
Bangladesh's Fisheries and Livestock Secretary Rawnak Mahmud was present in the programme as the main guest, while Bangladesh Livestock Research Institute (BLRI) director-general, Dr. Nathu Ram Sarker attended the programme as a special guest.
Institute of Nutrition and Food Science of Dhaka University Professor Dr Khaleda Islam also spoke in the programme.
DLS director-general Dr. Abdul Jabbar Shikder was the chairman of the event and Moshiur Rahman, BPICC's president, moderated the webinar.
The annual egg output rose to 17.11 billion pieces in the fiscal year FY2018/19 from 4.96 billion in FY2009, according to the DLS data.
Bangladesh produced 5.74 billion eggs in FY2010, 6.07 billion in FY2011, 7.30 billion in FY2012, 7.61 billion in FY2013, 10.16 billion in FY2014, 10.99 billion in FY2015, 11.91 billion in FY2016, 14.93 billion in FY2017 and 15.52 billion in FY2018.
As of August 2019, there are 81,425 registered poultry farms - 54,411 of them are broiler chicken farms, 18,954 are layer chicken farms and 7,829 are duck farms.
