Denmark's number of pigs slaughtered may drop 1.6 million in 2012

As a result of German farmers buying more and more pigs in Denmark, the number of pigs bred and slaughtered in Denmark is estimated to drop by 1.6 million in 2012 compared with 2011.

According to a new analysis from VSP and Danish Crown, the number of pigs to be bred and slaughtered in Denmark is expected to drop by another one million or 5% in 2013 due to the massive state subsidies received by German farmers, which makes it possible for them to pay considerably higher prices for pigs. As a result of this, Denmark is expected to lose 4,000 jobs and export revenues worth DKK4 billion (US$698.62 million) in 2012-13.
