Malaysian seafood firm to launch contract fish farming in Terrengganu

Malaysia's Temanse Aquaculture Sdn Bhd (TASB) together with the Terengganu State Department of Fisheries (DOF) is to launch a contract farming initiative at the Kenyir Lake.

According to local reports, the contract, worth MYR2 million (US$591,261), is aimed to raise fish production to 180 tonnes a month by the end of 2010.

This is the first cooperative programme for the aquaculture company with the department of fisheries. The company wants to allow entrepreneurs to run their own fish farms.

The contract farming scheme will train people in fish farming over a six-month period, according to the report.

The initial farms will be on a 30 hectare site at Sungai Como in Kenyir Lake.

The company wants to open another 70 hectare farm as well.

The shortlist of candidates for the farming project will be drawn up in January next year, with training starting in February.
