US recognises Vietnam as the biggest exporter of large shrimps

 

 

Vietnam is the biggest exporter of large-sized shrimp to the US in the first eight months of this year, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers on October 19.

 

Between January and August, Vietnam shipped 3,800 tonnes of large-sized shrimps valued at US$62.4 million to the US, posting an increase of 21.7 percent from late 2006.

 

The US imported US$2.33 billion worth of shrimps in the first eight months of this year, down by 0.4 percent from last 2006.

 

Other big exporters of shrimps to the US include China, Thailand, Bangladesh, and Ecuador.

 

Vietnam raked in US$737.4 million from exporting 76,017 tonnes of all kinds of shrimps in the first seven months, down 3.5 percent on year in volume but up 3.5 percent in value.

 

The US took the lead among importers with total import revenue amounting to US$248.8 million though it bought only 19,225 tonnes. Japan bought 26,362 tonnes worth US$225.6 million.

 

Other big importers were EU, Taiwan, Canada, South Korea, Australia and China who bought US$75.9 million, US$31.5 million, US$29 million, US$28.5 million, US$27.9 million and US$22.1 million, respectively.
