Conference Held in India to Address Improved Productivity in Oilseeds For Self-Sufficiency

Self-sufficiency in oilseeds with improved productivity' will be the theme of the annual convention of India's oilseeds and vegetable oils industry and trade to be held in Indore during November 8 and 9.

Organised by Soyabean Processors Association of India (SOPA) and the apex body Central Organisation for Oil Industry and Trade, the meeting will examine issues impacting the domestic processing sector including oilseeds productivity, edible oil imports and related tariffs, oilmeal exports and so on.

Kharif 2003 oilseeds crop estimate will also be released on the occasion.

With the present capacity, the industry is geared to meet India's domestic requirement of edible oil but falls short because of non-availability of raw material, SOPA said, adding that efforts are directed at increasing production and productivity.

By early 1990s, India is already nearly self-sufficient in edible oil production, and has turned into the world's largest importer with an annual volume of 50 lakh tons.
