The local government of Punjab, India, is preparing to roll out a vaccination campaign to protect livestock from foot-and-mouth disease, Times of India reported.

The vaccine will be provided free of charge to the entire livestock population of the state, according to an official announcement.

A total of 816 teams have been formed to ensure the effective implementation of the vaccination programme.

Animal Husbandry Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian revealed that 6,547,800 doses of the vaccine have already been distributed across various districts. He instructed officials to complete the inoculation drive by the end of November 2024, stressing the importance of maintaining a proper cold chain during the distribution process. He also highlighted the need to educate livestock farmers on the benefits of participating in the vaccination drive.

Principal Secretary of the Department, Rahul Bhandari, added that the Joint Director of the NRDDL in Jalandhar has been appointed as the nodal officer for the campaign. To coordinate the effort, the Animal Husbandry Department has established a state-level control room, as well as district-level control rooms in the offices of the deputy directors.
