Ecuador shrimp sector lose US$56 million in Jan-Aug
Ecuadorian shrimp industry reported losses for US$56 million between January and August 2009, driven by decreasing prices of shrimp pound in the international market and decreasing demand from the US and Europe.
According to Camara Nacional de Acuacultura (CNA), between January and August 2008, exports of shrimp totalled 202.3 pounds and in same period of 2009 exports amounted to 199.4 pounds, or US$461 million in 2008 and US$405 million in 2009.
Ecuador exports 98 percent of its shrimp production to the US (43 percent), Europe (55 percent), and the other 2 percent to Asian markets.
