Canada permits beef imports from EU after years of ban

Nineteen nations from the EU are now permitted to export beef to Canada for the first since 1996 when Bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) or "mad cow" disease struck the region.

The authorisation is part of Canada's rising recognition of the bloc's measures to control the disease, according to the European Commission. It also urged remaining trade partners around the world to "fully recognised international standards".

More European countries were getting the go-ahead to export beef to previously prohibitive regions. These include Ireland's deliveries to both the US and China, and France to Saudi Arabia.
