Drought in Indonesia Leads To Less Australia Live Cattle Imports

Australian live cattle exports have dropped significantly in sales to Indonesia because of the strong Australian dollar and drought conditions across the Asian neighbour.

Chris Hughes from Austral Livex says while there have been strong live exports in the past year. Pressure on feedlots in Indonesia in recent months has resulted in a decrease in demand for Australian beef.

He says that has led to a sharp drop in the number of head being sold.

"Our main client Indonesia is down about 17% over the last couple of months, although in the year to date it's up about 15%...Indonesia unfortunately is suffering from a really bad drought," he said.
