Iran's red meat production up amid declining supply

Production of red meat in Iran increased by 3% during the fifth month of the current Iranian calendar year, which spans from July 22 to August 21, 2024, according to the Statistical Centre of Iran (SCI), Tehran Times reported.
The report indicated that a total of 32,949 tonnes of red meat was produced during this month. Beef and veal dominated the output, accounting for 18,513 tonnes. This was followed by lamb and mutton at 11,057 tonnes, goat meat at 2,639 tonnes, and red meat from other livestock at 740 tonnes.
In contrast, the supply of red meat in the fifth month of this year decreased by 20% compared to the same month in the previous year.
Iran ranks among the leading consumers of red meat in the West Asia region, with lamb being the most popular choice among consumers. Per capita consumption remains about one-third of levels seen in countries such as the US and Australia. This lower consumption is primarily attributed to the prohibition of pork in Islamic law.
A significant portion of Iran's red meat imports is sourced from countries like Brazil. Iranian supervisors oversee culling methods in these countries to ensure compliance with religious guidelines.
