India's poultry industry advocates for swift approval of avian flu vaccines

India's poultry sector is urging immediate approval of indigenously developed vaccines to mitigate the threat of bird flu, which poses a risk to farmers and producers in India, The Times of India reported.

This call for action was made during the 39th Indian Poultry Science Association (IPSA) conference held at Nagpur Veterinary College in Nagpur, central India.

GL Jain, who played a pivotal role in the genetic development of Indian poultry, emphasised the need for government clearance of avian flu vaccines. "So far, the government has not approved vaccines for avian flu, though many companies have already developed them. The bird would be protected from the viruses, and the mortality will be minimised. The approval process is delayed due to the collection of evidence. The industry is pushing for early clearance and hopes to get it soon," stated Jain, 84, who served as the guest of honour at the event.

Jain highlighted the significant improvement in the performance of Indian poultry birds, including broilers and layers. He explained that performance encompasses a better feed conversion ratio (FCR), weight gain, and increased egg production. "The bird has acclimatised to the Indian climate, feeding conditions, and handling over the years. It is better than the European bird and no less than any other bird in the world. That is why India has a prominent market share," he added.

Bahadur Ali, managing director of Indian Broiler Group, noted that artificial intelligence (AI) would soon play a crucial role in enhancing the poultry industry. "AI would help in counting birds, screening for diseases or sick ones, and improving efficiency," he stated.

Dr NV Kurkure, director of research at the Maharashtra Animal and Fisheries Sciences University (MAFSU), remarked that while discussions on gut health in poultry birds are essential, it is also important to address tracheal and respiratory health.

Over 300 scientists, researchers, and academics have gathered for the first-ever All India Poultry Science Association conference, hosted by Nagpur Veterinary College, which is affiliated with MAFSU. The conference, running from October 16 to 18, 2024, at the Seminary Hills campus, aims to tackle critical issues facing the poultry sector. Topics of discussion include the threat of emerging influenza viruses and diseases, the impact of avian flu, and the potential applications of AI in poultry farming.
