Uruguay meat exports down 9 percent
The exports of meat from Uruguay stood at US$780 million between January and October 6, 2007, down by 9.0 percent year-on-year, compared to the same period a year ago, the national meat institute, INAC, said.
The exports of beef represented 83 percent of the whole meat exports during the period quoted, while mutton exports were 4.0 percent.
The beef exports were mainly destined for members of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), the European Union (EU), Mercosur as well as to Russia. Mutton exports were sent mainly to EU, Mercosur and Saudi Arabia.
Uruguay's meat sector posted US$1.109 billion worth of exports for 2006, up 24 percent year-on-year, the Latin America News Digest reported on January 8, 2007.
