Vietnam aiming to export processed pork to Japan
The Vietnam Commercial Affairs in Japan is currently studying the Japanese market demand on processed pork with an aim to export the product soon.
Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries has drafted 29 regulations on Vietnamese pork and if Vietnamese exporters meet such requirements, Japanese experts will arrive in Vietnam to inspect pork processing plants for a possible import deal thereafter.
Vissan and Duc Viet are seen as outstanding companies with much potential in exporting pork to Japan.
Nguyen Hoai Son, the Affair's representative said this is a good opportunity for Vietnamese food exporters because Japan is a large market, noting that pork export will increase Vietnam's export revenues from Japan.
Previously, Vietnam has not yet been allowed to export processed pork to Japan because it is listed on countries with foot and mouth disease appearance.
According to figures provided by the Vietnamese consulate, Japan spends around US$200 million on imported pork per annum. Demand for imported pork increased by 3.2 percent in 2002 to 10 percent in 2006.
Main suppliers of processed pork to Japan include China, the US, Italy, Thailand, Germany and Spain.
