California Meat Company recalls beef on E. Coli concerns

A San Diego-based meat wholesaler recalled about 925 pounds of ground-beef that might be contaminated with E. Coli.

No illnesses had been reported from the products sold by San Diego Meat Co, the Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service said Tuesday (Oct 13).

The recall applies to 15-pound cases of ground beef patties and 10-pound bags of bulk ground beef produced between October 7 and October 12 and sold to San Diego County-area caterers and restaurants.

The company was retrieving and destroying the meat, and the company's own tests of the same products showed no bacteria, San Diego Meat co-owner Bob Watkins said.

E. coli is a potentially deadly germ that can cause bloody diarrhea, dehydration and, in the most severe cases, kidney failure.
