Australian canola crop forecast up 1.8 million tonnes

Forecast production from Australia's 2009-10 canola crop has been raised to 1.80 million tonnes, up 4.7 percent from a month earlier, reflecting favourable seasonal conditions, the Australian Oilseeds Federation said Thursday (October 14).

If achieved, output this crop year ending March 31, 2010, will still be down on actual 2008-09 production of 1.88 million tonnes.

Canola is grown in the same areas as wheat and barley, many crops of which are also experiencing similarly favourable seasonal conditions, particularly in southern growing areas.

"Cool seasonal conditions in New South Wales over the past two weeks reduced the potential for further yield loss," the federation said in its monthly crop report.

Harvesting in the north of the state will start soon, it said.

In Victoria and South Australia, temperatures remain cool, likely producing one of the best crops in many years, especially if conditions remain favourable in coming weeks, it said.

In Western Australian, which is estimated to produce 825,000 tonnes or 46 percent of the national total, harvesting is already starting.

Australia's annual canola output averaged 1.32 million tonnes a year in the five years to 2008-09 of which an average 700,000 tonnes was exported.

The federation represents growers, processors and marketers and users.
