Japan beef consumption falls slightly in August
Japan's beef consumption in August fell 9 percent year-on-year, to 64,210 tonnes (boneless equivalent).
According to the Agriculture and Livestock Industries Corporation, the country's domestic beef consumption remained stable at 27,577 tonnes, up 1 percent from August 2008, while consumption of imported beef declined 15 percent year-on-year to 36,633 tonnes.
The amount of beef distributed in the market is correlated to production and imports during the month. The fall in imported beef consumption in August was largely impacted by reduced imports from Australia, down 8 percent year-on-year, as well as subdued consumer spending and subsequent slower sales in the foodservice sector - major user of Australian beef, particularly frozen items.
Out of Japan's total beef imports, 76 percent are imported from Australia - the top supplier - followed by the US at 14 percent.
