New aquaculture closed-containment system takes first cohort of 50,000 salmon smolts

Hauge Aqua's innovative aquaculture closed-containment system called "The Egg" reached a milestone as it took its first cohort of 50,000 salmon smolts at 150g each, Fish Information & Services reported.

The new cage system was positioned in place in Gjermundnes, Norway.

Cato Lyngoy, CEO of Hauge Aqua, said fish, people, and the Egget were all prepared after ten years of planning and recent hectic weeks of preparation, adding that it was an important day for those who worked on the technology of the Egg.

Eik Settefisk, a supplier to the aquaculture sector, provided the smolts. Prior to being moved into The Egg, they had been given "super smolt feed" in recent weeks, according to Hauge Aqua.

Lyngoy said the smolt initially wandered around a little, but soon began to shoal along the edge, as they hoped.

At 21m high and 15m wide, the "Eggtet" pilot version can hold about 100 tonnes of fish. It is only a tenth as big as the others that will eventually be constructed.

Hauge Aqua said the pilot version of The Egg is the initial phase of the development project being carried out by Hofseth International, Akvakulturpartner, and Hauge Aqua AS.

Siri Vike and Trond Severinsen, representatives of the management at Ovum, which was formerly known as Hauge Aqua Solutions, said this serves as a concept proof in action, adding that they can now confirm whether what they have thought is correct, both biologically, technically, and commercially.
