Canada's British Columbian pork industry braces for PEDv outbreak
The Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea virus (PEDv), which killed piglets in parts of eastern Canada, has put British Columbia's pork industry on alert.
A first PEDv outbreak occurred in Ontario at the beginning of 2014 and is advancing towards Manitoba, according to Geraldine Auston of BC Pork, who believed that PEDv had caused a spike pork prices.
In the meantime, organisations are gearing up for possible outbreaks during summer, a warmer period which hinders the progress of the viral spread.
Auston said that farmers have been working on farm protection while sampling is being conducted at processors. "Even at processing where they're ensuring that all the loading bays and all these things are properly cleaned and maintained, the trucks are properly washed, cleaned and disinfected."
