The third estimate for the Czech Republic's total 2009 grain harvest - including corn - is 7.713 million tonnes, down 7.7 percent on the 2008 harvest of 8.356 million tonnes, the Czech Statistics Office, or CSU, said Tuesday (October 13).

The estimate is based on data collected from local farmers Sept. 15. The September harvest projection is higher than the second estimate of 6.717 million tonnes, which was based on data collected July 15.

The first 2009 harvest estimate for corn is 704,000 tonnes, down 18 percent on the 2008 harvest of 858,000 tonnes, largely due to a smaller planted area, the CSU said.

The harvests of most other crops are also expected to be down on 2008 due to lower yields and smaller overall planted areas, the CSU said.

The estimated grain crop yield, including wheat, is expected to total 5.08 tonnes a hectare this year, down from 5.42 tonnes a hectare in 2008.
