India egg consumption held back by high feed prices
India's average annual per capita egg consumption has remained static at 43 pieces, despite recent promotional efforts to boost intake, due to higher feed prices.
In comparison, Japan's average annual egg consumption per person is 346 pieces, while China is 312 pieces. Mexico's annual per capita consumption is 304 pieces, said the National Egg Coordination Committee.
India's per capita egg consumption is not growing because the government did not pay attention to the rate, and poultry feed ingredients such as corn has become more expensive, said Venkateshwara Biofeed Business Manager, Sanjeev Chintavar.
Chintavar said the government must either subsidise poultry feed or announce a minimum egg support price to alleviate the issue.
