UK officials commit to improvements in fishing industry
English and Scottish ministers have committed to improvements in the UK's fishing industry, in a bid to make it more sustainable and thriving.
For England, key action areas would include managing fisheries within the marine environment, effective implementation of the EU common fisheries policy and promotion of recreational fishing.
English fisheries minister Ben Bradshaw said the action plan was challenging and required government commitment, as well as stakeholders' cooperation.
In Scotland, an additional GBP6.5 million of funding was pledged to create about 100 new jobs in the industry. It would also be partly used to modernise fishing vessels and improve port facilities.
Scottish fisheries minister Ross Finnie said he was committed to the profitability and sustainability of the fisheries sector, through the support of funding.
