Increase in cost of poultry production in Bangladesh

The cost of production of eggs and chickens has gone up in Bangladesh as the prices of raw materials rose in international markets, said the Bangladesh Poultry Industries Central Council (BPICC) in late September.

BPICC president Moshiur Rahman said the production of egg and chicken had reduced due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

"However, the production cost has increased because of the price hike of raw materials in the international market," Rahman said.

He spoke at a discussion on the role of media to raise awareness on animal protein. BPICC organised the event in association with the US Soybean Export Council (USSEC) at a hotel in Dhaka, said a press release.

Khaleda Islam, a professor for nutrition and food science at the University of Dhaka, said: "There are various misconceptions about poultry egg and broiler meat standing in the way of increasing animal protein intake."

She said that, although every adult person needed to consume one gram of protein per kilogramme of body weight, most Bangladeshis consumed less.

She added: "People suffer from various diseases due to protein deficiencies, and in our country, the child mortality rate up to one year is high due to the same reason."
