Canadian salmon farmers to invest in support of British Columbia aquaculture post-COVID-19
Salmon farmers in British Columbia, Canada, plan to invest $113 million in aquaculture projects and create close to 450 new jobs as they seek to support the province in its post-COVID-19 recovery.
The investments, mostly focused on Vancouver Island, will involve the expansion of sites and establishment of facilities including a land-based brood facility, a land-based smolt facility with recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) and a new hatchery. An effluent system at a hatchery will also be upgraded.
"BC salmon farmers are poised and proud to help support economic growth and recovery in our communities at this difficult time. And we are excited for the future of northern Vancouver Island," said John Paul Fraser, executive director of BC Salmon Farmers Association (BCSFA).
BCSFA represents 70 businesses and organisations throughout the value chain of finfish aquaculture in British Columbia.
