Tofurky producer files lawsuit challenging Louisiana meat substitute labeling law

Turtle Island Foods SPC, which operates as the Tofurky Company, filed a lawsuit challenging a Louisiana law that bans food producers from labelling plant-based alternative meat products with meat related terms such as burgers or sausages, Reuters reported.

The lawsuit, filed against Michael Strain, Louisiana Commissioner of Agriculture and Forestry, claimed the law violated the company's First Amendment right to free speech.

Tofurky is the brand name of plant-based, meat alternative products by Turtle Island Foods produced to replicate the taste of turkey. It is made from a mix of organic tofu and wheat protein.
