Shrimp disease could hit India's seafood exports

It is likely that India's total seafood exports would slump by 10-20% this year due to lower shrimp production caused by a fungal disease, said the Economic Times.

Representatives of the sector explained that the production fall was caused by the spread of fungal disease favoured by inadequate rainfall.

"The prevalence of microsporidian EHP (Enterocytozoon hepatopenaei) in the shrimp farms has resulted in stunted growth in the vannamei shrimps. The survival rate among shrimps is also low," pointed out S Muthukaruppan, president of the Society of Aquaculture Professionals in Chennai.

The disease has been found in the farms of Andhra Pradesh state, which produces nearly 70% of vannamei shrimp for export. Earlier this year, white spot disease cases were reported in the farms as well.

National Centre for Sustainable Aquaculture (NaCSA) chief executive officer K. Shanmukha Rao said there was no medicine to control EHP and only the best farm management practices can prevent the disease.
