MoU to enlist 4,000 farmers in India to supply livestock to border soldiers

Preparations are complete for a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the Uttarakhand Cooperative Federation of India and the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) to supply livestock and animal meat from farmers and cattle rearers in border districts.

About 4,000 farmers from Champawat, Chamoli, Uttarkashi, and Pithoragarh will be involved in supplying sheep, goats, poultry, and trout fish to the soldiers.

Chief secretary Radha Raturi instructed officials on October 7 to finalise the MoU after completing all formalities. The partnership aims to curb migration from hill areas, promote development in remote regions, and provide quality food to the forces.

Raturi said the project would boost economic activity in border areas, promote local animal breeds, increase employment opportunities, and support the 'Vocal for Local' initiative. She added that the MoU would strengthen the supply chain in the border areas, ensure fair prices and direct sales for farmers, and guarantee the ITBP a steady supply of fresh food year-round from plain areas without disruption.
